COVID-19 Rapid Testing in Conshohocken & Norristown, PA

Patients who are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone who has recently tested positive for the virus can visit AFC Urgent Care Conshohocken for COVID-19 rapid diagnostic testing. Our center performs rapid testing using the Abbott ID NOW diagnostic test, which allows us to provide patients with results the day they are tested. The ID NOW test falls under the umbrella of PCR tests and can be classified as an Nucleic Acid Amplification (NAA) test or as an NEAR or LAMP test. The Abbott ID NOW test is a molecular test, providing more accurate results than an antigen test that may be available at other centers and clinics. Patients who have recently been exposed should not get tested immediately in order to prevent a false negative: the recommended timeframe for testing is between 3-7 days after exposure for an accurate result and diagnosis. Appointments for rapid testing are accepted between Monday and Friday.

What should I do when I go in for my rapid test?

Masks or face coverings are required for patients who visit AFC Urgent Care Conshohocken for any visit, including rapid testing. Your nose and mouth should be covered until your provider asks you to lower the covering for the sample collection, which is done by taking a gentle swab of your upper nasal cavity. The process is painless and mild discomfort may be felt. It only takes a few moments to collect the sample.

How the rapid test works

The sample is brought to our on-site lab where it is combined with a chemical mixture and inserted into a machine specially designed to detect the presence of the active COVID-19 virus. The chemicals expose the virus and detect it when it is present in the sample. Once the result is determined, it is displayed on-screen and printed. A member of our staff will contact you that same day with your results, allowing you to adjust your behavior and activities accordingly.

If your results return positive, you should prepare to remain in self-isolation for at least 10-14 days. Make sure you let anyone you have been in contact with that they may have been exposed and should get tested. If your results return negative for COVID-19, you should continue following health and safety guidelines set by the state of Pennsylvania as well as the CDC, which include wearing masks in public, practicing safe social distancing and washing your hands frequently with antibacterial soap and warm, running water.
